Week Four

No class this week because of Good Friday, however I did go to the very helpful talk that was done in the library. I learnt quite a few things like using the * to look for everything with that word plus the numerous variations of that word. And using OR. These are just the little things I took away from it, but still very helpful. Their was also the whole finding good solid keywords to search with in terms of finding good readings/ journal whatever etc. to help guide our project. Certainly helpful just before the break.

Week Three

Meeting with Mark

Was told to keep on going with what I had been doing except that i should also look outside of New Zealand road safety and look into statistics and info from around the world. I think looking into Australia specifically could be really helpful because they have such a similar culture. It will be interesting to see if they have the same kind of advertisements like us, the sometimes really quite dark ones. At this time I still want to talk to someone at my dads work because she is the one that has to fill in all the info on the road safety side of things and all the info in terms of when accidents accrue or SH in EBOP. I dont know if its the entire region but its definitely the Rotorua side. Mark also says that by the time we are back from break I should definitely know the kind of direction I should be going in but just to keep on reading and keep soaking up the info. I wont know about the ethics stuff till we have the meeting or whatever after the break.

This crash (above) especially is significant in terms of a push towards working with Road Safety because I saw the aftermath in real life, my dad worked on the job, I almost had to but was working down the other end of the highway so couldn't make it. A women fell asleep at the wheel. If she had pulled over for a 10 min nap on one of the nearby picnic areas she may not have died that day. However, people don't seem to recognise that fatigue is a major problem in travel. Its not one of the main targeted issues in terms of road safety ads, unlike drink driving and speed. One that stands out for me was one from when I was a kid was a dad falling asleep at the wheel with his wife beside him and his daughter in the back seat. 

Three words/ week two

Opportunity
Potential
Recycle 
Safety

Were the four words I was looking at heading into the second week. I ended up choosing Recycle, Safety and Opportunity because potential and opportunity are along the same paths and I preferred opportunity. I chose Recycle because I know of a lot of the waste that has to go with taking care of our roads. The amount of signs that are replaced in a year is crazy and then your just left with a whole lot of scrap metal. However after researching and the class talk Im leaning more towards our understanding (or lack of) around road safety and respect for the road.

I ended up with the three words of opportunity, safety and crisis but with the side note of not letting it get to heavy, and trying to maybe look at the lighter side.

In class Tristam also talked about the interrelations(?) medium, message and aesthetic and how the connect, which I found interesting, and will try to keep in mind for later. So hopefully won't forget that.
